Betsey Stevenson

Betsey Stevenson is Professor of Public Policy and Professor of Economics at the University of Michigan’s Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. A labor economist, she studies the economic forces shaping the modern family, women’s experiences in the labor market, and how each influences the other. Her more recent work examines AI and the future of work, caregiving and paid leave, and the pandemic-era labor market recovery.

She served as a member of President Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers from 2013 to 2015 and as Chief Economist of the U.S. Department of Labor from 2010 to 2011. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of Lyft, Inc.; as a Faculty Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research; and as a member of the Sloan Foundation Advisory Board.

Stevenson is the co-author, with Justin Wolfers, of the leading Econ 101 textbook Principles of Economics, and the two co-hosted the Think Like An Economist audio course. A past Bloomberg Opinion columnist, she is a recurring commentator on the U.S. economy for NPR’s Marketplace, CBS’s Face the Nation, and Bloomberg Television. She holds a BA from Wellesley College and MA and PhD degrees in economics from Harvard University.
